CHIEF OFFICER – Bulk Carrier

Company Overview


Our company is a reputable owner/operator of modern dry bulk vessels, trading globally. We place strong emphasis on safety, regulatory compliance, optimal performance, and crew welfare. We now seek a highly qualified Chief Officer to join a 61,000 DWT class bulk carrier built ~2012, with modern cargo handling gear, trading in international bulk trades.

Job Title


Chief Officer (2nd in Command / First Mate)


Reporting To


Master (Captain) and technical / operations management ashore as required.


Primary Responsibilities


Assist the Master in safe navigation, ship operations, and compliance with company policies, flag state, classification society, and international maritime conventions (ISM, SOLAS, MARPOL, etc.).


Oversee deck operations: cargo handling, stowage and trimming, hatch covers, lashing, securing, ballasting/deballasting, stability management.


Prepare, review, and supervise the cargo plan, stability calculations, and ensure proper execution of loading/unloading operations.


Supervise the deck department: maintenance, repairs, inspections, safety drills, crew training.


Oversee safety, security, and environmental protection measures (e.g. Oil record book, garbage, shipboard safety audits).


Assist in passage planning, watchkeeping (as per schedule), and navigational safety (bridge resource management).


Maintenance of deck equipment, ensuring all cranes, winches, hatch covers operate within class limits.


Generate periodical reports to Master / management: deck maintenance, planned maintenance system (PMS), spare parts needs, consumables, inspections.


Ensure compliance with ISM/ISPS/SSSC, audits, inspections, and regulatory surveys.


Requirements / Qualifications


Mandatory Credentials:


Certificate of Competency as Chief Mate / Chief Officer (STCW, unlimited or appropriate for vessel size)


Valid medical certificate and ENG1 (or local equivalent)


Proficiency in English (spoken and written)


Basic Safety / Advanced Fire Fighting / Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boat


Certificate in Cargo Handling & Stowage, Grain / Bulk (as applicable)


Approved training: Bridge Resource Management (BRM), Leadership & Managerial Skills


Working experience as Second Officer / Chief Mate on bulk carriers (minimum years: e.g. 3–5 years in senior deck roles)


Familiarity with bulk cargo operations, especially steel coils or heavy cargo if relevant


Experience with crane operations, cargo gear, heavy lifts, securing systems


Desirable / Additional:


Additional training in ballast water management, energy efficiency, environmental compliance


Experience in audit preparation (ISM, PSC, class)


Good interpersonal skills, leadership, ability to train and motivate deck personnel


Problem-solving ability under pressure, attention to detail
